On the 13th of April, 2024, we had the wedding of Chris and Julie. As their DJ|MC, I had the honor of being part of their special day. Now, this wedding was an exciting one and I am thrilled to share it with you all. First, let’s take a trip down the memory lane to see where it all began.
Where it all began
Chris and Julie’s love story began in the digital age, as they crossed paths on the dating app Hinge. Despite their origins on opposite coasts, Chris hailing from Long Island, NY, and Julie from San Jose, CA, fate brought them together. Their first date, a casual brunch, unfolded into a delightful surprise as they discovered they shared the same birthday. This connection laid the foundation for a bond that deepened with time. On February 4th, 2023, Chris and Julie got engaged.
The Wedding
Let me start by talking a bit about the location. Chris and Julie chose The Legacy Resort and Spa for their wedding venue, a stunning location with breathtaking views . With its elegant architecture and landscaped grounds, it sets a sophisticated tone for the ceremony. Plus, its central location makes it easy for guests to explore San Diego’s top attractions, from Balboa Park to the beaches, and enjoy shopping and dining at Fashion Valley Mall. Fun Fact, the venue has quick access to Downtown, Old Town, Liberty Station, and the airport, it’s the ideal choice for couples seeking both beauty and convenience on their special day.
Memory lane of Chris and Julie
Walking into the hall, I saw this huge half-LCD-globe filled with memories of Chris and Julie’s journey together. Childhood photos, milestones, you name it. It was such a touching tribute to their love story. This was so much better than having a projector and a screen.
Oh, and here’s something cool. That massive LCD globe they had? Yeah, turns out it cost the venue over $500,000. Crazy, right? But hey, it definitely added some wow factor.
The Grand Entrance
The reception party kicked off with the wedding party and the newly-weds making their grand entrance to Marvin Gaye’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” is a straight classic riginally recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell in 1967. The song was written by the prolific songwriting duo Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. The song conveys a message of unwavering love and commitment among lovers as no obstacle or distance can keep them apart.
Chris and Julie’s wedding got an exceptional touch thanks to the amazing lion dancers which added a touch of cultural richness to Chris and Julie’s wedding celebration. Originating from Chinese tradition, lion dancing symbolizes good luck, prosperity, and warding off evil spirits. As the colorful lions leaped and danced to the beats of drums and cymbals, they brought an air of excitement to the occasion.
First Dance
Chris and Julie chose “Turning Page” by Sleeping at Last for their first dance. “Turning Page” is a beautiful and emotional ballad that speaks to love, commitment, and the journey of marriage. In the word of the singer, “with the arrival of you, everything is beautiful”.
Parent dance
Now, let’s not forget about the parent dances!
The Mother & Daughter Dance at Chris and Julie’s wedding was accompanied by the classic “And I Love Her” by the Beatles. Released in 1964 as part of their album “A Hard Day’s Night,” the song is known for its simple yet profound lyrics. This choice of song pays homage to a cherished tradition between the bride’s father and Julie, where they often played it together on the guitar. It was a touching tribute to their bond, despite her Father’s absence. The Mother & Son Dance featured “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver, a heartfelt ode to home and roots released in 1971.
Bouquet and Garter Toss
As Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” from 2004 filled the air, the bouquet toss came into the scene. The bridesmaids competed for the bouquet, laughter filled the room as they playfully struggled to catch the bouquet.
A highlight of the day? The garter toss. Amidst the excitement, an unexpected twist occurred. One of the groomsmen, who seemed totally uninterested, casually caught the grater! Talk about a spontaneous moment that had everyone cracking up!
Open Dance
Open dance was such a blast! We started the night off with music that both generations present could enjoy. With songs like “Gasolina” by Daddy Yankee and “Titi Me Preguntó” by Tego Calderón. However as the night raged on I shifted to Julie’s favorite genre of music to dance to… hip-hop. She’s from the Bay area here in California so the bay area tracks were definitely hitting. I played so much hip hop though, most classic bangers like Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” by ABBA, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” by Frankie Valli and “You’re the One That I Want” from the “Grease” soundtrack. I didn’t skip out on the 90’s though because the crowd ate that up too.
We ended the open dance with their last dance selection “Mr. Brightside by The Killers”. Originally written around 2001 with The Killers’ guitarist Dave Keuning about Flowers’ experience, the song was later featured on The Killers’ 2004 debut album Hot Fuss, and was one of the pair’s earlier songs that made the cut .”Mr. Brightside” was the perfect song to their last dance as it signifies their journey as a couple and the obstacles they have conquered. This song definitely fulfilled the purpose Brandon aimed for it to fulfill. Brandon, in an interview, emphasized the importance of focusing on the brighter side of life and living in the moment.
Congratulations to the happy couple, Chris and Julie, may your love continue to grow and flourish for years to come. Cheers to your love, health and good times!
