The Honest Guide to Picking a Florist (and Avoiding Regret Later)

Choosing a florist sounds can be simple but can get quickly overwhelming when you start researching

From dreamy Pinterest boards to long price lists and conflicting advice.

Florals are not just a detail, they shape the atmosphere, anchor your color story, and appear in nearly every photo and choosing the right florist can be very important

So before you book based on Instagram vibes alone, here are seven important questions to ask that most couples don’t think of but absolutely should.

1. Do you handle setup and breakdown on the wedding day?

It’s easy to assume your florist handles everything from delivery to arranging table pieces but not all do. Some florists only drop off, and you or your planner are left scrambling to place arrangements.

Ask whether they handle full setup and breakdown. And be clear about timelines when will they arrive, how long will they need, and who is responsible for clearing floral items after the event?

2. What’s your backup plan if certain flowers aren’t available?

Flowers are seasonal and sometimes unpredictable especially with global supply delays. A good florist always has a plan B.

How do they handle substitutions? Are you allowed to approve changes? Do they know how to work creatively within your color and style, even if specific blooms are unavailable?

3. Can I see full galleries from real weddings you’ve done?

Social media posts are curated and edited. What you want to see are full wedding galleries, bouquets, centerpieces, ceremony installs, and how the designs work together.

4. How do you price your services and what affects the cost most?

Florals can vary dramatically in price, and most couples underestimate how much they’ll need. So your florist shoukd be able to give you a breakdown and understanding what drives the price, types of flowers, size of arrangements, labor, delivery, etc. so you you budget better.

Ask if they offer floral packages, minimums, or custom quotes. And make sure there are no hidden costs.

5. How do you handle communication and planning updates?

You don’t want to chase vendors down for answers. Consistent communication, timeline reminders, and openness to collaboration matter more than most people think.

6. Do you collaborate with the planner or design team?

If your florist doesn’t talk to your planner or lighting vendor, things can go wrong. Installations might not be timed properly, or colors may clash due to miscommunication.

Ask how do they coordinate with the rest of the team?

7. How do you help couples figure out what they actually need?

Not everyone knows the difference between a posy bouquet and a cascading oneor whether you need flowers for the cake table. A great florist helps you map out what makes the most impact for your space and priorities.

If a florist can suggest ways to get the look you want and even within budget, they are worth considering.
